Lal Kitab: An Overview

Lal Kitab, meaning “Red Book,” is a collection of five Urdu books on astrology and palmistry, written in the 20th century and based on Samudrika Shastra. The book’s core consists of poetic verses filled with philosophy and hidden meanings, offering remedies known as “farmanns” or “upayas.” Believed to have Persian roots, it has led to a branch of astrology called Lal Kitab remedies. These simple solutions for various planetary issues have become part of folk traditions in North India and Pakistan.

The original author of these verses remains unknown, with many scholars having interpreted and translated the books into other languages. Lal Kitab introduced a new style of horoscope analysis with quick and affordable remedies, avoiding traditional practices like rituals and gemstone recommendations common in other Vedic astrology branches.

A unique aspect of Lal Kitab astrology is its focus on practical remedies, also called farmaans or upayas. These remedies aim to balance planetary energies and bring harmony into one’s life, including simple rituals, mantra recitations, wearing specific gemstones, and performing acts of kindness.
